What is Forensic Odontology?
The field of forensic science has various branches like forensic medicine, toxicology, forensic biology, forensic physics, and so on. Forensic odontology is a small but impactful part of the field of forensic medicine. Just like clinical dentistry, forensic odontology is also an art which used for identification in cases of mass disasters and even archaeological sites. This field works in the interest of justice and uses dental findings and other dental evidences like lip prints, bite-marks, and also age estimation. This field also plays an important role amongst the cases of abuse for different age groups as well. The field also provided knowledge for the diagnosis of different systemic diseases using the signs which are seen in the dentition. The importance of dental records can be understood as it is being extensively used for as a part of the ante-mortem record in cases of Disaster Victim Identification. The application of forensic odontology is in every field of forensic science and is being extensively explored across the world by various dental professionals.
