Biopsy in Dental Practice – When, Where and How to do Oral Biopsy

Certificate of participation with 1 CME is available

Oral biopsies in dental practice are typically performed when there are suspicious lesions or abnormalities in the mouth that need further examination. They're usually done in the dental office under local anesthesia. The process involves taking a small tissue sample from the affected area, which is then sent to a pathology lab for analysis. This helps in diagnosing various oral conditions, including oral cancer, infections, and inflammatory diseases, allowing for appropriate treatment planning.

Highlights of the webinar

  1. Oral biopsies are performed promptly when suspicious lesions persist for more than two weeks despite initial treatments or when there's a rapid change in the size, shape, or color of the lesion.
  2. The main purpose of an oral biopsy is to diagnose various oral conditions.
  3. Depending on the suspected pathology, different biopsy techniques such as brush biopsy (for potentially malignant lesions), incisional biopsy (for larger lesions), or fine-needle aspiration (for cystic lesions) may be employed.
